We encourage families and individuals of all fitness levels and competitive experiences to participate in this fun event! For the safety of our youth, we are allowing those ages 14 and up to participate.

The 2012 Athlete Guide is now available!

To help prepare first-time triathletes, we will be offering a few clinics to help you with each portion of the triathlon. The dates and times for the swim, bike and run clinic are to be determined.

Who Benefits from the Tri?

The Bangor Y provides opportunities for youth and families in the Greater Bangor area. We are a community leader in supporting children, adults and families in their lifelong quest for physical, emotional and social wellness.

The funds raised from the Bangor Y's Tri for the Y Sprint Triathlon will go towards our Annual Giving Campaign to provide programs and services to those who would otherwise be unable to afford them.

Not only will participating in this event help support those in need of financial assistance but it will also provide you with a fun day for you, your family and friends! Help support your community by participating in this exciting new event!

We Need Volunteers!

This event wouldn't be the same without volunteers! With so many parts and pieces to a triathlon, we'll need volunteers to help us keep this event safe and to ensure this event runs smoothly. Being a volunteer is a great way to be part of the action! It's a great way for friends and family to not only help support the same cause as their athletes but to also cheer them on during the event. Volunteers will receive a T-shirt, refreshments during the day, and will get to be part of something special. Since this is our first triathlon, we estimate a need for 100 volunteers in a variety of positions to help us run this even smoothly.

Race Time: 8:00am Race Start
Location: Bangor Y, 17 2nd Street, Bangor ME 04401

Swim

The swim course will be a wave start featuring the Bangor Y's Means Pool (4 lanes) and Aloupis Pool (6 lanes) with 20 swimmers per wave (8 in the Means Pool & 12 in the Aloupis Pool). Each person will stay on their own side of the lane to complete their distance. Athletes will swim 325 yards (13 lengths) before exiting and running across the street to transition.

There will be approximately 3 - 5 waves and will be put together based on individual swim times for the 325 yards. Each swimmer must submit their time for the 325 yards at the time of registration.

Bike

The bike course is 12.9 miles which consists of a few hills and a loop around the Bangor/Hampden area.

Run

The run course is a 3.1 mile run which consists of two significant hills and a nice loop near Stephen King's house.

Transition

Athletes leave the pool from the southeast exit (on the front of the building) and run across the street to transition. The transition area will open at 6:00am on the morning of the race and will close about 15 minutes before the start of the race.

The bike racks will have your race number. Place your bike on the side of the rack that your number is located.

During the race, only volunteers and race management are allowed in the transition area. Only athletes that have started the race may enter the transition area. Those who have completed the race, may only return to the transition area when the last athlete has transitioned from the bike to the run portion.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I wear for the race?

Some athletes wear a "tri-suit" that they can swim, bike and run in, but many also put on shorts over their bathing suit for the bike and run. Some change between each event! Just remember that there is no covered changing area in transition so our athletes keep some sort of swimming base layer on for the entire event. Because of the time of year, we'd recommend having extra layers available, especially for the bike (arm & leg warmers, tights, wind-proof jerseys, etc).

How are the Waves assigned?

Athletes will be assigned to a wave according to their listed swim time for the 325 yard swim.

What time will my Wave start?

The first wave will begin at approximately 8:00am. The start of each wave after the first one will depend on how long it will take the prior wave to complete the swim. You will be provided a wave sheet with your start time when you pick up your packet.

What time should I arrive?

The transition area will open no earlier than 6:00am and will be closed by 7:45am for the race. All athletes MUST be set up in the transition area by 7:45am.

Where do I park?

Athletes may be dropped off with their gear on Second Street, but the road will be closed to traffic and parking during the race. You may find a spot in the local neighborhood off the run course.

What should I bring with me on race day to the transition area?

Bike, Bike Helmet, Bike Shoes, Running Shoes, Pre-filled Water bottles, extra clothes to change after the race. Lockers and showers are available.

How do I keep track of my transition spot?

Your transition spot will be where your bike is racked. This will be clearly marked with your number and volunteers will be on hand to help you find your bike and gear. We suggest a small, bright towel next to your bike to organize your gear on. Remember you can always attend one of our transition workshops for suggestions on managing transition! Unfortunately, balloons or other signs are not allowed in transition.

Will there be professional medical personnel on hand?

Capital Ambulance has agreed to staff the event and will be there.

Are there any aid stations on the race?

Yes, there will be one at the transition area and one on the run and bike course. The Run and the Transition Aid Stations will feature HEED Sports Drink and Water, as well as a selection of bananas, pretzels, and gels. The Bike Aid Station will have a water bottle hand-up & gels.

What kind of bike can I ride?

Athletes may ride a bike from the following categories: mountain, hybrid, road or tri bike. Recumbent & tandem bikes are not allowed.

Do not ride a new or different bike for the first time on the race or arrive at the event with a bike that is not in good operating condition (tires included). Please be aware that there is bike maintenance or assistance on the course.

If you have any questions, please e-mail us at triathlon@bangory.org.
